Strawberry Sando (Japanese Fruit Sandwich) (1)

Any time can be the perfect time for dessert! So for Day 11 of my Ramadan 2023 Series, here’s a little something for all you sweet tooths out there — the strawberry sando!

FamilyMart Strawberry Sando

Whenever I set eyes on this sandwich, or think about making it, I’m always reminded of my family back in Malaysia. One of my nieces is a huge strawberry sando lover. It’s probably her most favorite thing ever! Especially the ones that are from FamilyMart (a Japanese convenience store). She can go through multiple of those in one go.

But it’s actually pretty easy to make at home. It requires only a handful of ingredients, and you’ll get to enjoy them in no time.

what is strawberry sando?

Strawberry sando, also known as “ichigo sando”, is a Japanese strawberry sandwich. It’s made by layering sweetened whipped cream and fresh strawberries between two pieces of Japenese milk bread, called “shokupan”.

Some of you might be weirded out by the notion of a sweet sandwich. However, let me tell you, with the soft milk bread, the light texture of the whipped cream, and the sweetness from the strawberries — the combination just works really well!

It’s a bit like a twist on the strawberry shortcake. But instead of spongecakes, we use milk bread!

what fruit is best for sandos?

You can make a Japanese fruit sandwich with other fruits besides strawberries. Some popular options are oranges and kiwis. But in general, you can use any fresh fruits that are in season and can hold up its shape.
