Although Black History Month is coming to an end, it’s important to remember to continue to celebrate thoughtfully and respectfully year-round. By integrating these developmentally appropriate activities into your preschool program, you can help young children develop a sense of empathy, appreciation, and understanding of Black history and culture. Below are a few more ways to help you celebrate!💗Role Play: Set up a dramatic play area with costumes and props that represent famous Black figures or historical events. Encourage children to act out scenes from stories or create their own narratives based on what they've learned.💗Diversity Discussions: Discuss the importance of treating everyone with kindness and respect, regardless of their skin color or background.💗Field Trips and Virtual Tours: Take preschoolers on outings to local museums, libraries, or community centers that feature exhibits or programs about Black history. Alternatively, explore virtual tours and online resources that showcase important historical sites and landmarks.

“If we give our children sound self-love, they will be able to deal with whatever life puts before them.”― bell hooks, Teaching to Transgress: Education as the Practice of Freedom Children need "mirrors" that reflect their inherent worth and nurture their self-discovery. According to a study from the Learning Policy Institute, students of color who are taught by teachers of color have better academic performance, improved graduation rates, and are more likely to attend college. “Poetry comes out of life.” – Gwendolyn Brooks ✍🏾✨To uplift all voices that have an impact on our country, it's critical that Black history is studied and celebrated—not just in February, but throughout the entire year. Black history is American history, and when kids understand the fuller picture of the past, it helps them understand the fuller picture of today. This year, our focus is on highlighting the profound impact of Black poets who center their work around young children. You can find this beautiful mural of Dr. King right here in North Lawndale, directly outside of our flagship site. Its presence reminds us of the many impactful Black historians that came before just like poet and teacher, Gwendolyn Brooks.

Did you know: Our dedicated teachers practice #continuityofcare by guiding our community's kids every step of the way, from infancy to pre-K graduation! And, for school-aged youth who move on to our Out-of-School Time (OST) programs, they're returning to a space full of grownups they know and trust. By creating these meaningful relationships between educators, families, and children, we create an ecosystem of support that prepares young learners for school and beyond.
