Best-Theaters-in-New-York-for-a-Date - GigaBrain (12)ORIGINAL POST

For added context:

  • My date stays in Manhattan and doesn’t come by this side often.
  • She’s an AMC member (if that adds anything).
  • The plan is to get drinks before or after so even if the theater is meh but the area is cool, that works.

I second syndicated!! Even if you don’t see a movie in the theater their main bar is AMAZING. It’s huge and they play films on the projector. Sometimes silent films sometimes cult classics with subtitles. This way you get the movie “experience” but can still talk and vibe. Also TONS of fun bars to hit up after if it’s going well.

Syndicated BK is really great, the tickets are cheap as a second-run theater, the food isn ’t overpriced, and I find the service to be less-obtrusive than at Alamo. Easily accessible off the L too. Just buy tix in advance because some of these showings lately have been selling out.

Agreed. OP get your partner to bk. Way more chill than the Alamo in downtown bk. The bar space sets it apart from nitehawk - such a great place to chill before/after shows. Food is good too in the theater

Depends mostly on where YOU live though.

Whats the best/comfortable theater in nyc

My idea of a good theater is the regel in delancey-essex, clean, big reclining chairs, and plenty of space along with a decent viewing. But I hear some movie work better in imax/dolby so are there any other theaters that match this in otther parts of the city.

Regal opened that theater in 2000. If it’s always empty why is that theater still open? movie theaters closures happens when a specific location doesn’t make money.

Emptiness of a theater depends on the time of day you go. I normally go in the mornings and it’s empty. I only see a few people there. theater gets full towards the evening especially on weekends. I went to see the flash at the night time and it was packed to the point where I couldn’t get anything from concession.

Best AMC in New York City?

I'm staying in Brooklyn for the next few weeks, and haven't canceled my A-List yet, so figured I'd ask what everyone's favorite is. I'm willing to travel into Manhattan no problem.

Back home I tried to go to Dolby whenever possible, as my theaters IMAX had awful chairs. But any feedback for best audio/visuals is appreciated!

Lincoln Square IMAX is the only real IMAX. Kips Bay is my go-to because they often have a lot of showtimes, and the seats are nice. 19th street only has a couple screens but I think is underrated. Generally speaking I avoid basically everything else, unless I wanna see something in 42nd Streets Dolby, which is pretty rare (although 42nd deserves a mention for the sheer number of screens/ showings they have in a day. Wanna catch a Bollywood movie or something that’s been out for six weeks? 42nd is your best bet.)

The best premium screens IMO are the IMAX and Dolby at Lincoln Square, but the other screens really need a remodel. Empire has 25 screens so there is a wide variety of what is being shown there, but only the Dolby and Prime screens have recliners. Kips Bay also does have indies and recliners. I also like 34th Street.

A fun perk to the Prime theater at Empire 25 is that its on the very top floor, so you get some cool views out to Times Square as you go up the escalators.

AMC's response when asked about it: The IMAX auditorium is currently offline while a screen renovation is being completed. We hope to have the IMAX up and running again as soon as possible. Please keep an eye on our website for updates on showtimes.

As has been stated, the best screen in the city by far is Lincoln Square IMAX. Best Dolby is Empire 25. Empire's Prime theater is also nice.

Lincoln Square's Dolby is a little weird--it is two levels with a balcony. You'll either be looking up or down at the screen depending on which level you sit in. I think the best seats are the second row of the balcony (Row K I believe), although if you're tall you might be able to do front row of balcony. For me the bottom of the screen gets cut off when I recline in the first row by a metal guardrail.

Best theaters for non-premium formats are Kips Bay and 34th Street.

The Aero Theatre in Santa Monica is really cool. They have excellent programming for classics, indies and underground hits. Place has a lot of character to it, the most iconic scene in Donnie Darko was shot at that place. Was originally built 100 years ago as a late night escape for engineers building airplanes.

Most of their screenings are on 35mm/70mm film and there are a few Q&A screenings every month. Afterwards there are some cute shops on Montana Ave to walk down including a nice if not slightly overpriced taco spot across the street and a number of great froyo locations. Depending on how the date is going you can walk down to the Promenade or Pier.

A more left-field choice but absolutely worth checking out while it's still summer in LA but the Cinespia screenings in the Hollywood Forever Cemetery are all a ton of fun. It's gotten a bit too crowded, so I'd recommend coming early and packing a picnic. If you want you can walk over to the Little Caesar's Pizza beforehand to get some food and soda. These run until around Labor Day and they have a couple of Halloween themed screenings in the cemetery in October.

It's a beautiful art deco landmark that overlooks the historic Paramount backlot. Films are screened on the Douglas Fairbanks lawn so you won't be tripping over any headstones and they're projected on to a mausoleum. One of those LA things you gotta do at least once. I'd say this is better for a third or fourth date though because the location can be a bit stressful.

Alamo's cool because it's also got the downstairs shop to browse before/after a show.

Other Westside theaters that are more interesting than an Edwards:

  • Laemmle (Sawtelle or Santa Monica)
  • Nuart in Sawtelle
  • Aero

Bonus: the Sawtelle strip has some great Japanese food, and Bleu is a dive bar with great people watching.

While it’s probably not anything wildly exciting as a movie theater by itself, the one at The Grove is nice, then gives you a ton of options right there if you two want to extend the date with a drink, coffee, bookstore, etc. The views from the top floor of the parking garage are actually really solid and you have pan pacific park right next door for a stroll.

New York Theater Advice For Dune 2?

I’m trying to decide how to see Dune 2. How would you rank the following options:

  1. Front two rows of Lincoln Square IMAX
  2. Perfect seats at Angelika East 70MM
  3. Decent seats at AMC 34th St IMAX
  4. Decent seats at AMC Kips Bay IMAX
  5. Decent seats at AMC Empire IMax

Any advice about sitting towards the front of any of the IMAXs and or rankings of IMAXs would be appreciated!

If you can make a decision at the last minute, consider checking and re-checking Lincoln Square in the 2-3 hours before screening time as seats open up as A-listers cancel their tix when their alerts start to go off and they can't make it.

Also: check out r/NYCmovies - people there may also have opinions.

I just saw it at Angelica East and the projectionist f*cked up something with the start of the movie. We yelled and booed and they fixed it, but he didn’t start the movie over.

There were also visible lines on the screen.

I would go for IMAX over that one if doing it over.

My advice, don’t sit towards the front in any imax. Ideal seating is a couple rows down from top in the middle. If you can see 70mm, I’d go with that.

the only way i could see Oppenheimer in 70mm IMAX was front row center seat opening night (literally all that was left, would have had to wait a week otherwise) and it was fine, are those seats recliners? Because that's a must.

Lincoln square is basically the best screen in NY - and it is the only 70mm IMAX.

I would try to see it there but I know all their showings are always filled up so you might want to wait a few extra days if you don’t want to sit close.

Where's the best place to go for a live theater date night?

Hey everyone! Outstate Minnesotan here! I live a solid 2.5 hours southwest of the Cities. Hubs and I love visiting for concerts and the Mall! But recently I have really been itching to see something more along the lines of a play or opera or something. I'm not familiar enough with the Cities to really know where to look! So what are your recommendations for live theater, opera, stand-up, or just a really nice date night for two out-of-towners? When to buy tickets to get best deals?

Posted by acdfm · in r/Broadway · 2 years ago

Hi! I’ll be in NYC in a few months, and I really want to see Hadestown while there. I know tickets for it are in high demand, so I’m thinking of getting one through seatgeek to have better control of the seat location. I’m willing to splurge a bit for better seats, but I’m not outrageously picky!

I just want to ask for your experience re when I can get a good deal. Would it be better if I book months in advance? Or, since I’ll be staying for a week and have some flexibility on when to catch the show, would it still be possible to get good seats for cheaper if I book much closer to the dates I’m there?

Would appreciate recommendations on maybe another show or two to see, if you have any. Come From Away, maybe?

Thank you!

Avoid http://broadway.com and any other resellers!

In NYC the official ticket seller for Hadestown is SeatGeek, and Telecharge for Come From Away. You can go to a show's official website and click on the link for tickets to go to the official ticket seller.

You can check http://www.broadwayforbrokepeople.com/ for lotto/rush options.

For the day of the show you can also go to the TKTS booth

Hadestown is not currently offering discounts because it's still selling very well.

Here is a code for Come From Away:https://www.playbill.com/discount/playbill-discounts-for-come-from-away-2021

Playbill, BroadwayBox, and Theatermania typically offer official discount codes.

https://www.playbill.com/discount

https://www.broadwaybox.com/

https://www.theatermania.com/shows/new-york-city-theater/broadway?offer=discount

Broadway week, where some tickets are 2 for 1, is currently going on:https://www.nycgo.com/broadway-week/?cid=NYCEM_BW22_TicketsonSale_Interest_20220111

A lot of people will recommend TodayTix. TodayTix resells tickets for shows at theaters which are owned by Shubert, Nederlander, or Jujamcyn. Avoid TodayTix for shows at these theaters because the "discounts" they offer are the same Playbill/Broadwaybox/Theatermania codes I mentioned. I only recommend TodayTix for discounts for shows at theaters owned by Roundabout and ATG, where they actually have a partnership.

Also I always recommend buying directly from the box office if you can so you avoid service fees.

Great comment! I buy a ton of Broadway tix and never knew about TodayTix’s partnerships although I was aware of the pricing differences.

Which theaters are owned by Roundabout and ATG? I know for Roundabout shows you can sometimes get the $30 tix if you’re under 30, I just did that for Caroline or Change.

ATG is Lyric and Hudson. Roundabout is Sondheim, American Airlines, and Studio 54

I've also managed to score pretty good deals with TodayTix a few different ways:

  • They have online rush tickets that can sometimes be easy to get and offer deep discounts. (I think they're always Roundabout or ATG shows, per your comment)
  • They had a deal for 10% off a gift card, which I took full advantage of and still have some money left on.
  • When they have no-fee tickets available, I've been able to get rear mezzanine seats to a few shows for under $30.

But otherwise, yes, the best way to guarantee seats for a particular date but not pay a ton in extra taxes and fees is to literally show up to the box office and buy it in person.

Honestly the reccomendations always going to be when buying tickets AVOID http://broadway.com(they charge ridiculous fees) and go through the official Hadestown website and use their vendor (for my tour tickets it was ticketmaster but I think the show in new York uses a different vendor)

Yes, I’m somewhat worried about the seats I may be able to purchase through lotto/rush, TKTS, or even from the known ticketing sites. While I noticed they may drop closer to the date, am unsure if I’d be better off paying a bit more for the privilege of choice. Thank you for the tip, will keep this in mind!

Thank you! We didn’t get there early enough for Hadestown tickets but we got Come From Away and Wicked, both day of! It’s easier if you are okay with single seats or your group splitting up a bit, because single seats are the ones that don’t sell and then are the cheapest :) but our seats were seriously amazing and less than $100 both times!

I've been monitoring the prices to check the trends of prices going up and down, and I've seen such big discounts on the day of, but sometimes for some plays, they go up much higher than I expected. Will try to set price alerts on StubHub, thank you for the tip! Maybe I'll try it prior to flying out to see how likely I can find good seats for lower prices. Thank you again!

Cool, another rerelease I don't have! I'm not a big fan of the original version of A Change of Seasons but it'd be good to have a copy at hand to compare and contrast with the 1995 release of the song.

I think the original instrumental section that became The Inevitable Summer is pretty awesome but I think the lyrics and melodies overall were way weaker. A lot of people back in the day overhyped it because they were Kevin Moore fanboys. While Derek replicated a lot of the parts, his contributions shouldn't be discounted.

The lyrics in the older version feel cheesy hell and I'm glad that they changed that, but I love a lot of the instrumentals in the darkest of winters and the inevitable summer. If I'm being honest I like the inevitable summer better in this version because of all the amazing improv and they just go all out. I have a personal attachment to the studio version though so I can't say I like this "demo" more, but I love how different it sounds and it feels so special and unique in its own account. Petrucci's solo in another world is also so great.

Hell yeah! I'm pretty sure I still have an old MP3 copy of that, but I love the fact that all these recordings are being released for a wider audience now. I could almost spend all my time listening to DT this year and not run out of anything new to listen to!

Um, no. Century Media website made a typo by saying it's 1995 on the product title. If you zoom in on the cover it says 1993. It's a Portnoy-era official bootleg re-issue. Still welcome though.

As someone who has all of the previous bootlegs, I'd appreciate if they could release some new material sometime. The last several batches have just been re-issues.

Without living in NY, how are people so up to date with what shows are on Broadway?

Posted by abacus-wizard · in r/Theatre · 10 months ago

Every time Tony season somes around, I find myself being completely clueless about the new plays and musicals that are nominated or win awards.

I'd like to be in the loop about things, but I just have no idea how people figure out what's showing on Broadway without actually going to see the shows. How are people figuring this stuff out?

I live in upstate New York so I guess I’m a little bit closer to the action, but I’m not right there. But it’s just obsession lol. Like others have said, http://Broadway.com and other related sites, I listen to Broadway podcasts and YouTubers, I have a lot of friends and family who are into theater that I can discuss with etc.

I get weekly emails from TheaterMania, which tells me everything that’s happening on Broadway, including ticket deals. I also listen to the Broadway Channel on SXM. That’s not always 100% up to date because they do replay shows, but when it’s live, Julie James and Christine Pedi and Seth Rudetski have the scoop.

I have read http://Playbill.com regularly since the early 2000s and only joined the Reddit Broadway and this community fairly recently. I also signed up for the http://Broadway.com and TheatreMania email newsletters and read theatre reviews (mainly on http://NYT.com and Vulture). I don’t (yet) live in the tristate area but try to visit the city 1-2x a year and see as many shows as I can in 7-8 days (with rush and lottery playing a big part in making it possible), as well as see touring productions when they come to my city.

Date ideas that aren't just drinks and dinner?

Posted by Trick_Present4961 · in r/AskNYC · 1 year ago

I've been seeing this guy for a little over a month and we've done plenty of bars and restaurants already (we're both early 30s btw). We have a date this Wednesday night, and I'm trying to think of an alternative where we can have a bit of a different experience. We saw a jazz show a couple weeks back and that was super fun, so something along those lines is what I'm thinking--a little different, but not hard to plan or super time-consuming.

Some things I saw that I've made note of are: Sofar Sounds, salsa class/dancing (idk if I'm confident enough to dance in front of him lol but it's an idea!), Nighthawk (although BK would be a pain for us both to go to), date night at the Met (that is only on Fridays, though, so won't work for this date). These are just the kind of slightly different things that are in line with what I think would work for us--not looking for an outright adventure, but just something a little different to keep things exciting! And something feasible for a weeknight :)

Lower Manhattan is best, but really open to wherever in Manhattan! I've scoured around Reddit already, but am just seeing a lot of bar recommendations for things like first dates...

Thanks in advance!

Broadway shows- musicals and plays. Performances at Lincoln Center and Carnegie Hall. Opera at the Met.

Baseball games if you like baseball.

NY Botanical Garden. Brooklyn Botanic Garden.

The Whitney Bicentennial.

Comedy Cellar

I know June is far away, but if things are still strong tribeca film festival starts then.

Some of these I’ll definitely keep in mind for daytime dates! Weirdly idk if we’re at the level to see a bway show together…is that a weird line to draw? Lol! But if we’re still together when summer comes around, I think lots of these are great options. Thanks!

I generally don't like early dates where you have to be silent. It's especially awkward when you should be talking more to get to know them better.

In your list you said Nighthawk is too far. Alamo Drafthouse opened a location in Lower Manhattan that might be easier to get to:

That is a great one but it also depends on the person (they might hate the idea) but at least it's a good way to to filter people. More ideas here.

best theaters in New York for a date

Key Considerations for Choosing a Theater for a Date Night in New York:

  1. Ambiance: Look for theaters with a romantic and cozy ambiance to set the mood for a special date night.

  2. Location: Consider theaters located in vibrant neighborhoods with plenty of dining options for a pre- or post-show meal.

  3. Seating: Opt for theaters with comfortable seating arrangements, such as plush seats or cozy couches, for a more enjoyable experience.

  4. Programming: Check the theater's schedule for shows that cater to different tastes, whether you prefer classic plays, Broadway musicals, or avant-garde performances.

  5. Reviews and Recommendations: Look for theaters with positive reviews and recommendations from other theatergoers for a memorable and enjoyable date night experience.

Recommendation: The Broadway theaters in New York City offer a wide range of shows to suit different preferences, from classic musicals like "The Phantom of the Opera" to contemporary plays like "Hamilton." Consider checking out theaters like the Majestic Theatre, where "The Phantom of the Opera" is performed, or the Richard Rodgers Theatre, home to "Hamilton." These theaters not only offer top-notch performances but also provide a quintessential New York City theater experience for a memorable date night.
