Lot 150

* Davids (Arthur Rhys, DSO MC and Bar, 1897-1917). Original ALS dated 26/10/17 No. 56 Squadron, R.F.C., B.E.F., and addressed, the day before he was killed, believed shot down at Polterrjebrug, very near the front line, at approx. 11:08, British time, by Leutnant Karl Gallwitz, at the time acting Staffelfuhrer of Jasta Boelke, to Frida Mond, later to marry Herbert Brackley, ‘Thanks ever so much for your letter. I was so glad to get news of your family again. I hope you are enjoying your new French School: and I am so glad you seem to have liked Oxford. I hope I shall see when I go there after the war, if I continue to have my present luck in the scrapping. It really is splendid fun if you take it in the right way. Though somehow one has not that immense satisfaction which the people on the ground have that they have done their in the beastly business. Personally I feel I have done nothing at all! Remember me to all the family & excuse haste. Sincerely yours Arthur Rhys Davids. Arthur Rhys Davids was just twenty when he was shot down and killed, he had been on the Western Front with 56 Squadron for six months, having gone straight into the RFC from Eton. He came to public fame as ‘Eton’s Boy Airman’ through shooting down German ace Werner Voss and he is remembered among other things as the pilot who always carried while flying a small volume of William Blake’s poetry which had been given to him as a Christmas present by his sister in 1916. The exact details and circ*mstance of Arthur Rhys Davids’s last fight and death are not known but it seems likely that both he and Voss lie in complete obscurity, probably under five miles apart somewhere in the area of Ypres. A copy of the biography of Arthur Rhys Davids entitled ‘Brief Glory’, by Alex Revell, published in 1984, is included in this lot. (1)

* Royal Air Force Pilots Flying Logbooks. A group of four logbooks kept by Squadron Leader Maurice Victor Longbottom, commencing Bristol Flying School, Filton, 19 March 1935, flying Tiger Moths, Harts, Audax’s, Ansons, Scapa’s, London II’s and eventually Spitfires, Lockheeds, Blenheims, Wellingtons, etc., all orig. blue cloth bindings, 4to & oblong 8vo. Maurice flew over ninety different aircraft and clocked up a total flying time of just under 2, 000 hours. He was part of the team test-flying the ‘bouncing bomb’ being developed by Barnes Wallis and on 13th May 1943 he records in his logbook in red ink the first live drop of ‘Upkeep’ - only three days before the famous Dambusters Raid took place. For most of 1944 he had been regularly flight-testing Vickers new Warwick aircraft and it was while testing one of these machines on 6th January 1945 that he crashed into a railway junction at Weybridge, Surrey and was sadly killed. * The Longbottom Archive. A collection of handwritten letters, mostly between Maurice and his wife, Linda, plus various photographs, news cuttings, two marriage certificates, pilot’s license for private flying, June 1935, navigator’s licence, September 1938 and pilot’s licence for public transport, November 1938, a pocket diary from 1940, etc., the letters, mostly personal and domestic content, commence when Maurice was stationed in Malta and Egypt c. 1937-39, continue from RAF Heston, c. 1940, Boscombe Down, c. 1941 and then on Vickers-Armstrong headed notepaper, often undated, followed by letters of condolence in early 1945 including a photocopy of a letter sent by Barnes Wallis ‘We all were devoted to your husband, as I expect you know, but perhaps there was a specially close link between him & me, for he was so ready and willing to talk over technical problems & we had many discussions together. He was the only one of our pilots with whom one could really plunge into the future, & I miss my contact with him very very greatly’, there are also two long letters of condolence from fellow Vickers test pilot Bob Handasyde, the first dated 2-2-45, explains that he is not yet fit enough to fly but ‘yesterday... Maurice Summers went up very high to carry out some tests to investigate the rudder trouble suspected in Maurice’s accident, with the result that he got into difficulties and had to bail out. There was a strong wind blowing at the time with the result that his parachute dragged him across a roadway and he received rather severe head injuries, but I don’t think he is in any danger. I wish to God that MVL had been up high. I just can’t settle down in this place with everything around me to remind me of him and our friendship’, he also mentions returning Maurice’s logbooks and discusses the disposal of his motor car and other belongings, the second letter dated 27-2-45 starts by saying that Linda’s wish has now been carried out ‘... and dear Maurice is now with the pheasants etc. which gave him and myself so much pleasure. I am very grateful to those concerned in making it possible for me to carry out this last little ceremony which was very simple but I am afraid very sad’, he also discusses the disposal of Maurice’s books, saying that he might give one to Barnes Wallis, and goes on to say ‘M. Summers by the way is making very good progress and is quite his old self, although of course with a fractured dome (head) he will need a lot of care for some time to come’, the handful of photographs include a poignant image of Maurice and Linda, with arms linked, looking happy, dated on the reverse May 1941 (-)
